Ergonomics in the Workplace
What is ergonomics?
Ergonomics comes from the Greek words ‘ergon’ meaning work and ‘nomos’ meaning law, and is a scientific discipline that studies the interaction between humans and the environment. It is about designing the job and environment to fit the worker rather than finding the worker to fit the job and covers all aspects of a job, from the physical stresses it places on joints, muscles, nerves, tendons, bones and the like, to environmental factors which can effect hearing, vision, and general comfort and health.
Given the amount of time we spend in an office or office-like environment, ergonomics is important in order to prevent discomfort or repetitive strain injuries. Simple solutions such as changing your work habits can be corrected to help improve your experience in the workplace.
How to adjust your chair?
- Location from the desk: Forearms are parallel to the desk and shoulders are relaxed with elbows at 90°
- Height: Feet should reach the floor comfortably. If they cannot do so, you should consider a footrest
- Angle of backrest: 90°-100° to the floor while working
- Screen: Eye-level and an arm’s length away to avoid slouching forward
How to adjust your workspace?
- Frequent used items (staplers, pens, telephone etc) should be placed close enough so you do not have to stretch to get them
- Consider rearranging your desk to be centric around certain items like the mouse or telephone or writing area depending on how you work
Basic exercises
A simple sheet can be downloaded from our download section for you to follow
Exercise is important so as to help reduce the pressure on your spine, muscles, joints and ligaments. You should get off you chair every 20mins and walk around, even if it just around your workstation!

Product Care
Fabric: Please clean the upholstery at least once a month by using a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle at low speed or brush in the direction of the fabric by using a soft brush.
Stain removal: Stains are best removed using a fabric cleaner. Please test the colour fastness on a hidden section of the upholstery first. Thereafter, please follow the product’s cleaning instructions. Please do not apply the cleaning product direct onto the upholstery, use a cloth. Please clean stains as soon as possible and from outside to the inside. Please do not apply too much pressure as it might change the surface of the upholstery. If the stain is beyond cleaning, please contact us and we can provide a reupholstery service.
Leather: Leather is a natural product and wrinkles will occur naturally over time due to tension. It should be wiped regularly with a damp cloth. Do not use chemicals, detergents etc and please protect it from direct sunlight.
Synthetic Leather / PVC / PU / Vinyl: Apart from its appearance, synthetic leather has no other characteristics in common with real leather. Please clean it with a damp cloth and pat dry. Do not rub or use chemicals.
Laminates: Please use a damp cloth and a mild liquid detergent or household cleaner and rinse with clean water, using a cloth. Do not flood the laminate, especially near seams, since water can penetrate and cause the substrate to swell. Dry the surface with a cloth.
Veneer: Please dust with a soft cloth. A damp cloth can be used but any excess water must be removed immediately. Avoid dragging objects on the surface as this will result in scratching. Please avoid chemicals and strong detergents.
Chromed Steel: Chromed steel is strictly for interior use only. Please use rubbing alcohol or baby oil on a clean cloth to remove grime. Please use a chrome cleaner to polish.
Stainless Steel: Regular cleaning using warm water with or without a gentle detergent is sufficient. Mild stains can be removed with stainless steel cleaning products.
Powder Coated Steel: Regular cleaning using warm water with or without a gentle detergent is sufficient. Please do not use chemicals as it can erode away the surface.
Die Cast Aluminium: Regular cleaning using warm water with or without a gentle detergent is sufficient. For scratches, buff with ‘Autosol’ metal polish.
Polypropylene: Please use a cloth with mild soapy water. Resistant marks can be treated with common household cleaners.
*Cloth mentioned above refers to a soft, clean, non-abrasive cotton cloth.
